The new 2019 NRCAN efficiency standard for transformers manufactured in Canada comes into full effect on May 1, 2019, and replaces the old C802.2-2012 standard. EWEL and Hammond Power Solutions, are ready for this transition and we want you to be ready, too.
Let’s get this out of the way right now: **Prices on distribution and power transformers are set to increase by 20-25% on May 1, 2019 or earlier.**
The new NRCAN 2019 standard applies to big power transformers and commercial transformers with aluminum and copper windings. It does not apply to some specialty transformers like epoxy-potted units, small control transformers, auto transformers, or transformers with NEMA 4 enclosures.
Here are some facts:
- The new NRCan 2019 transformers are between 20-25% more expensive than the old C802.2 transformers.
- Transformers manufactured to the old C802.2 standard may still be purchased and installed after May 1, 2019, provided that they were manufactured on or before April 30, 2019. The manufacturing date of the transformer is key. If the transformer was made before May 1, 2019, you’re OK to install it.
- Manufacturers like Hammond Power Solutions, Delta, Rex, etc. must stop selling C802.2 transformers as of May 1, 2019.
EWEL has a small stock of Hammond Power Solutions C802.2-rated transformers that we will sell down. We’re not reordering these, and once they’re gone, they’re gone forever. Contact us for availability and pricing on these transformers. We plan to order the new NRCan transformers as required and will stock them as soon as we can. **Old EWEL quotations for C802.2 transformers must be re-quoted with the new NRCan 2019-rated transformers.**
We recommend that new NRCAN 2019-rated transformers are installed in new construction projects. EWEL will quote these transformers on job packages from this point forward.
If you have any questions about this transition to more efficient transformers, please contact the expert staff at EWEL for more information.
